Why I started OKENSI

OKENSI was born from a need to connect with my Ghanaian heritage and at the same time reconnect with a part of me that had been tucked away for too long.


Getting back into my creativity felt like feeding my soul—pure goodness. That joy spilled into my craft- and it started a beautiful ripple effect that I couldn’t keep to myself. I had to share it.

At OKENSI, I’m not just making beautiful things — I’m writing love notes to culture, weaving symbols of self-expression, and celebrating the fierce spirit within us all.

Seeds Were Sown Way Back…

I was that creative girl—sketching, doodling, sewing, daydreaming... you name it.
In school, I dreamt of building my own brand. I studied fashion, art, and textiles, eventually working in the fashion industry. Creating has  always been part of me.

And now? I’m overflowing with gratitude that my childhood dream blossomed into something that fills me (and hopefully you!) with endless joy.

The Reconnection

After having my twin boys—born prematurely (whew, scary times)—I lost myself for a while. I was deep in mummy mode and forgot to check in with me.
Eventually, something felt off. I knew I had to reconnect with my creative core.

And when I did! Things realigned. I felt whole again- and with it, a whole new fire to create.

The Spark

My mama, the original style queen, inspired me big time.
Years ago, she gifted me antique African trade beads, passed down from her grandmother, a fearless entrepreneur in fabric and bead trading.

Those beads weren’t just beautiful — they carried stories, strength, and legacy in tangible form.

I started playing, exploring, experimenting... and something powerful was born. I felt called to honour my Ghanaian heritage and celebrate the vibrancy, craftsmanship, and brilliance of African cultures through luxurious, joyful jewellery. 

OKENSI Takes Shape

Little by little, OKENSI took form. The time had come to step back into my shine after years of dimming it.

The name comes from my Ghanaian name, Okensema, which means "Warrior Queen"—a woman who stands tall, advocates for others and shines unapologetically.
How perfect is that?

I began sourcing more beads from Ghana  and beyond, and dove into a space of creative freedom. I wanted to create pieces that reflect my heritage as well as celebrate and show Africa through a fresh lens, while offering playful, modern luxe pieces made with heart.

The Creative Offering

Today, I design and hand-assemble every jewellery piece in the OKENSI range. I also create:

  • Embroidered art
  • Colour-drenched paintings
  • Luxe silk scarves inspired by blackness, African beauty & brilliance

All of them radiate the richness, energy, and brilliance of the African continent.

Though I’m currently a one-woman powerhouse, I occasionally collaborate with skilled metalsmiths, makers, and digital designers to bring my vision to life.
